The new gardening term “Healthy design”: what to expect at the Garden Style 2024 conference

Why this year? “Garden style” have we chosen the theme «Healthy Design» for the conference? Who would have thought: once upon a time, when we thought of a beautiful garden, we imagined large bright flowers, wide paths and not even a single weed. And now the beauty of the garden is inseparable from… health? It may seem strange, but I’m about to tell you why this is a more important topic than it might seem at first glance.

This interview was published in the magazine «Sodo Spalvos», the questions answered by Lina Liubertaitė, founder of the «Garden Style» conference.

By participating in international landscape architecture conferences in Italy, Great Britain and Spain, I realized that ecology and sustainability are not just a buzzword when it comes to climate change. Sustainability includes the fact that healthy plants grow in the yard and the gardener is not a slave to the yard, but enjoys the quality of life. This is possible and the speakers at the “Garden Style” conference are about to present their methods.

French landscape designer Francois Travert will discuss an unexpected subject: cemeteries. Francois is eager to learn about Lithuanian customs in tomb design, making us very curious about what he will share and what trends he will highlight.

In future posts, you will discover modern garden decorations that you can create by recycling items you no longer use. Landscape engineer Gytis Lietvaitis will provide ideas and tips on this subject.

At the conference, you will find out about many fascinating plants and their successful pairings. Be prepared to take notes: It is not often that experts share their many years of experience so openly. And, naturally, she will provide us with the most reliable flower varieties that are both tough and long-lasting in bouquets.

We will further explore the topic of plants with Kęstučius Ptakauskas – the award-winning expert in oriental gardens will share his views on healthy trees. Is creative tree shaping harmful or is pruning really needed for trees? We will address these questions and examine trees from the perspective of health and design.

Nature as therapy is also linked to «healthy planning.» We understand that today, with many people working in cities and spending lots of time in front of screens, nature is becoming more appealing. A well-designed garden project can also rejuvenate the spirit, providing a place to relax and find tranquility. You will receive practical advice on how to make your yard more inviting.

A gardener’s fitness is also very important. Flowers are lovely and charming, but we all know that gardening requires physical effort. It is vital to do it correctly to avoid straining or harming your health. Throughout the conference, you will hear fascinating ideas on all these topics, which you can implement in real life.

Conlusion

The decision to dedicate the “Garden Style” conference to the theme of “Healthy Design” reflects a significant shift in how we perceive beauty in gardens. In the past, a beautiful garden was often defined by visual perfection — vibrant, oversized flowers, meticulously maintained lawns, wide symmetrical paths, and not a single weed in sight. Aesthetic appeal was the primary goal, and nature was shaped to match a strict decorative vision. Today, however, our understanding of beauty has evolved. Health — both ecological and human — has become inseparable from design.

At first glance, linking garden design with health may seem unexpected. Yet when we consider the broader context, it becomes clear that gardens are not just ornamental spaces; they are living ecosystems that influence our well-being. Healthy soil, biodiversity, sustainable water management, and reduced chemical use all contribute to a more resilient environment. A garden designed with ecological awareness supports pollinators, improves air quality, and fosters a balanced microclimate. These factors directly impact not only the plants but also the people who spend time in these spaces.

Moreover, the idea of “Healthy Design” extends beyond environmental health. Gardens affect mental and emotional well-being as well. Thoughtfully designed green spaces encourage relaxation, mindfulness, and connection with nature. Instead of striving for rigid perfection, modern garden design embraces harmony, sustainability, and functionality. The presence of diverse plant communities, natural growth patterns, and ecological balance creates a space that feels alive rather than artificially controlled.

Lina Liubertaitė’s perspective highlights how contemporary garden design must respond to current global challenges. Climate change, resource limitations, and increased urbanization require us to rethink traditional landscaping practices. Beauty alone is no longer sufficient; resilience and responsibility must guide our choices.

Ultimately, choosing “Healthy Design” as the conference theme signals a meaningful transformation in garden culture. It acknowledges that a truly beautiful garden is one that nurtures life — supporting ecosystems, conserving resources, and enhancing human well-being. In this new vision, aesthetics and health are not opposing concepts but complementary elements that define the gardens of the future.
