While landscaping fashion doesn’t change as quickly as clothing or interior design, we notice a few trends every year. Find out what world-famous garden designers offer, what are the landscaping trends for 2017.
HYPERLOCALITY
Climate warming, the preservation of natural resources, the search for naturalness lead designers to solutions that are of local origin. This trend has been going strong for several years now and it wouldn’t surprise me if it eventually turns from a fad into an everlasting rule.
Native plants – it’s not just the ones growing in the natural habitat near your property. These and those that feel good in the conditions of your garden, do not need additional coverage, soil improvement, additional watering, etc. Breeders work with a wide variety of plant varieties to breed not only the most beautiful cultivars, but also those that are undemanding and hardy.

However, we will not be ready for such projects for a long time – on the other hand, there is not such a great need for them, because in Lithuania we can grow many beautiful and useful plants without further significant intervention.
Another manifestation of hyperlocality is choosing solids. The stones do not come from Greece, the wood does not come from Siberia. If possible, prefer natural materials that are found or made nearby.
REFORM OF THE LAWN
The lawn usually has to withstand reforms every time it is necessary to rearrange the plot. Trends continually point the finger at grass, and designers reduce it or abandon it altogether. Although the United States is famous for its neighborhoods of single-family homes with manicured lawns adorning every yard, that’s where the talk is most inhumanly large resourceswhich are intended for the maintenance of this lawn. Irrigation, fertilization, spraying, mowing equipment, a lot of time spent on maintenance: for these reasons, well-kept lawns are on the fringes of trends and various lawn alternatives are making their way. Flowering meadows, low bluebells that do not require mowing, carpet plants, concrete or plastic honeycombs filled with carpet plants, gravel areas, wooden terraces: various lawn-changing solutions are gaining more and more attention.
In Lithuania the idea that the lawn requires a lot of resources and therefore its surface area should be reduced is still little examined. However, prudent construction site owners are already starting to demand such solutions from designers, so it is time for specialists to look for alternative proposals.

A prerequisite: all equipment, structures and details must be carefully coordinated with the style of the construction site and interior. Landscaping trends for 2017 here are no different than last year, but in Lithuania we have too many examples where structures, plants and other garden details do not stylistically harmonize with each other. This year it will be more important than ever.
