Cold extract with lavender

To make a cold lavender extract you don’t need much except a little more time. You can use fresh or dried lavender flowers. Place the flowers in a clean screw-top jar, making sure they are completely covered in oil. Place a cloth over the jar and do not close the lid. Then place the jar in a warm, sunny place for about 3-6 weeks. During this period the flowers release their precious ingredients into the oil. The lid remains open so that no residual moisture forms in the glass, which could cause mold to form in the oil.

Warm lavender extract

For a hot extract you need an ointment oven, a small handmade ceramic warmer powered by candles. This allows for even, gentle heat and makes you independent of electricity. The heat causes the lavender flowers to release their ingredients into the oil more quickly. Add 100 ml of olive oil and the lavender flowers to the ointment jar, mix regularly and leave the mixture to infuse for 3 days. At night it is advisable to blow out the candles and be careful not to leave the ointment oven unattended.

If you don’t have an ointment oven you can also do hot extraction on the stove. Use a bain-marie pot in which you will place a container with the oil and lavender flowers. Keep the temperature below 80 degrees and let the mixture slowly extract over low heat. Continue to turn off the heat, stirring regularly and making sure the mixture does not become too hot. The hot extract on the stove should last at least 4 hours. This means that in July you will receive a high-quality hot lavender extract for your natural remedies. Once the process is complete, the lavender flowers are filtered and your homemade lavender oil is ready. You can use it immediately externally or process it further to create a soothing lavender ointment. Here’s how to make the most of the healing properties of lavender in July.

Prepare a lavender ointment

You can prepare the ointment either in the oven or in a bain-marie container on the stove. Heat the lavender oil slightly and add 10 g of beeswax. Stir the mixture continuously until the beeswax is completely dissolved. The melting temperature of beeswax is around 62-65 degrees Celsius and the temperature should not rise as it is just a matter of melting the wax and mixing it with the oil.Lavender ointment recipe

Once everything has melted and mixed well, pour the still liquid ointment into the clean ointment jars and let it cool. After cooling, close the jars. The ointment will last for about a year in a dark, cool place, such as in the basement. We recommend using dark jars to best protect the ingredients. For the sake of clarity we place the ointment in a light colored glass, as it would not be so easy to see in a dark container.
