Are you looking for ideas for a flower garden? Here are my recommended summer-flowering perennials, some that bloom even longer. Some are rustic and traditional, others are reminiscent of English gardens, still others surprise with their resemblance to wild wildflowers and would be perfect for a naturalistic flower garden:
I selected these plants from «Oliceto» plant sites to share not only inspiration, but also a specific place where you can purchase these flowers.
1. Pentanium (Delphinium)

Pentiums provide verticality, so you can grow them even in flower gardens where you don’t have much space. Depending on the variety, Pentiums can grow up to 1.5 m and even more.

Late asters and their combinations with other plants that flower in autumnThe nice thing is that pentias can be of different colors, so by combining them with other plants you can create harmonious and beautiful compositions.
The flowers of ‘Magic Fountain Deep Rose White Bee’ are decorated with purple rings, the flowers of ‘Magic Fountain White’ are snow-white.
If you grow purple beaks, the dark blue pots ‘Magic Fountain Dark Blue Black Bee’ will suit them well, while the light blue pots ‘Magic Fountain Sky Blue White Bee’ will be perfect for brightening up a delicate white flowerbed.

Monochrome flower garden: elegant or boring?2. Snapshots (Geranium)
Most often, the beak rings are blue or purple. They look very simple, so for a long time I did not understand why beaks are so admired. But with their simple flowers, go-with-everything colors, beautiful foliage and reliability, I have found sedges to be an indispensable plant in any flower garden.
Snaps are suitable for planting in the center and edges of the flower garden, they perfectly fill the spaces between other plants. It is also surprising that these summer-flowering perennials are suitable for both classic and naturalistic flower beds.
Depending on the breed, they can be taller, shorter and the width of the coat can vary. For example, the weed ‘Orion’ looks like a small weed in the plant garden, but in your garden it should grow into a beautiful, powerful weed about 80 cm tall and just as wide.
3. Echinacea (Echinacea)
A modern flower garden is inconceivable without echinacea. This is a plant for summer beauty. Echinacea can be of various types: some are simpler, with a bright center and petals of one color, while others have a cosmic beauty: take a look at echinacea ‘Green Twister’.

learn designer tricks for pots and plantsEchinacea ‘SunSeekers White’ would be perfect for a farmhouse creating a naturalistic or ethnographic style – it is similar to whiteheads, commonly called daisies.
Few colors? Choose from multiple options: yellow «Mellow Yellows», soft salmon «SunSeekers salmon visions», orange tones «SunSeekers orange», traditional cherry shades «SunSeekers magenta» and the darker color «Cheyenne spirit».
4. Astrantia (Astrantia major)
Astrancijas are summer-blooming perennial flowers that grow very well in the Lithuanian climate and tolerate partial shade. It grows well in the sun and, if there is enough humidity, even blooms throughout autumn. It is the perfect plant for a moisture-free flower bed.
In the plant garden I found the following cultivars: Astrantia major ‘Red Joyce’, which sports dark pink flowers, and Astrantia major ‘Roma’, which grows in a large cluster of multi-pink flowers. This variety is especially loved by landscapers as it is reliable and looks good for a long time.

That’s not where you look when choosing a Christmas tree5. Yarrow (Yarrow)
This is an impressive perennial flower that grows in all its beauty in the first year. True, it is quite short, you will only admire it for a few years without doing anything. But for a quick effect, I advise you to plant this plant in a new flower garden, where other perennials have not yet grown and you still have to wait for its beauty.
Conductive soil is suitable for yarrow, so if sand and water do not stagnate in your flower garden, these are excellent conditions for admiring yarrow flowers.
Here are some varieties of yarrow:
- A modern farmhouse will certainly be decorated with pink inflorescences of yarrow ‘New Vintage Rose’;
- Sunny yellow yarrow – ‘Sunny Seduction’;
- Yarrow ‘Red Velvet’ blooms with red velvet flowers;
- The bright cherry blossoms are yarrow ‘pomegranate’.
6. Asterisk (Scabiosa)
Butterfly Blue ‘Butterfly Blue’ is reminiscent of Lithuanian meadows. Together with other herbaceous perennials, it is very suitable for a flower garden in a naturalistic style, and will give it a special accent during the summer.
The plant is suitable for sterile, easily drained soils, does not require particular conditions, does not require soil improvement or fertilization. That’s right: thanks to improved conditions, the star can spin.
Maybe you didn’t think about the asterisk when choosing plants for your flower garden. Pay attention to her, maybe you will find a place for her too.
7. Real lavender (Lavender angustifolia)
Not all the lavender you find in supermarkets can overwinter in your garden. Do not admire those with thick, round inflorescences resembling bumblebees. These are Italian lavender, for which Lithuanian winters are too cold.
If you plan to plant lavender in your flower garden, choose true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). Choose a sunny location with no shade for these perennials. Once flowering has finished, you can cut the fragrant branches, dry them and, for example, decorate your home, put them in cushions or use them in other ways.
8. Veronica (Veronica)
Remember we talked about verticality in the flower garden? Another plant that can perform this function is veronica. These perennial flowers that bloom in summer give a touch of modernity, refresh the flower garden with new shapes and structures. If your soil is fertile and moist enough, be sure to choose this plant.
In the Oliseto plot I liked three varieties of veronicas: the blue ‘First Glory’, the white ‘First Lady’ and the pink ‘First Love’.
9. Peonies (pioneer)
Peonies are popular summer-blooming perennial flowers that must be included in this list of nine summer flowers. Peony is long-lived, it can grow for 25-50 years in one place. True, it takes time for the bush to grow. I even recommend harvesting the flowers in the first year so that the plant can focus all its energy on the roots.
Later, when you want to take care of your peonies, we have prepared specific advice on what to do to keep the peonies in the vase for as long as possible – read here.
The variety of varieties of peonies is very rich, just the abundance of colors – pay attention to these charming varieties: «London», «Hillary», «Felix crousse», «Coral Sunset», «Callie’s memory», «Blush queen».
