Terrace gardening starts with pots

learn designer tricks for pots and plants

Edit Jokimčienė from the landscaping company A green dream» shared his tricks from practice. He says that landscaping the terrace does not start with the plants, but with the choice of pots. Most of the time, people choose several identical pots and simply arrange them in a row on the terrace. This type of pot arrangement is suitable if you want to cover the terrace wall or other elements, but the view will be quite boring.

Use these tricks to improve your image:

  • Use pots of different heights. Break that clear line! For example, between two oblong pots, place a taller square one. You will immediately see how the monotony has disappeared.
  • Place large pots in the corners. Place the tallest pot in the corner of the terrace, and the lower ones nearby on both sides, this way you will strengthen the edges of the terrace, and the view will be harmonious and not boring.
  • Use pots of one color. You definitely won’t wonder if you put pots of the same color all over the terrace, because you will add other colors later through the plants. If you still want the colors of the vases to contrast, choose them from the same manufacturer so that the design of the vases is similar.
  • Start with the corners. If you plan to frame the entire terrace with pots, start placing the pots at the corners and then fill the long edges with them.
  • Don’t forget to leave spaces between the pots for passages.

Which plants to plant in pots

Plant different sized plants in different sized pots:

  • Plant larger plants in larger pots: trees and shrubs. For example, if you plant a miniature apple tree in an outdoor pot, you will not only be able to enjoy the green leaves all summer long, but you will also see the apples ripen beautifully.
  • Plant small conifers or compact flowering shrubs in medium-sized pots. A good example is the small-flowered lilac, which flowers dwarfly but very profusely.
  • Plant annual flowers in smaller pots, which you can easily replace with others.

Cautious: large pots with trees and shrubs will form a stable frame for the drawing, they will be visible throughout the season (even when deciduous trees lose their leaves). And by planting annual flowers in small pots, you will save money: it is cheaper to change the composition of plants in a small pot than in a large one. Experiment, play with flowers of different colors so that the view on the terrace is not boring.

It is normal to grow only annual flowers in pots, but then it is expensive to have lush pots every year and we do not have a view in autumn and winter. Follow Edita’s advice and you will have a terrace view that is expertly designed and not boring.

Potted Perennials: Will It Work?

A regular gardener wonders if perennials grown in pots outdoors will freeze in the winter.

In the Lithuanian climate, you should always choose plants that can survive at least -25 degrees of cold. Edita says that pot growing conditions are even more difficult, so you should choose even more cold-tolerant plants.

Before buying, check the frost resistance of a particular plant. The good news is that a significant number of plants sold in Lithuanian nurseries can survive cold temperatures of more than -30 degrees, including the popular hydrangea and various conifers. Such plants are the best candidates for landscaping the terrace.

How to plant plants in outdoor pots

We have planned the arrangement of the pots on the terrace, we have chosen the plants: let’s get down to business. Edita shared a trick on how to plant plants so that the excess water that escapes from the pot does not dirty the terrace.

The sowing instructions are as follows:

  • Take a pan with a hole in the bottom to drain excess water;
  • Add drainage (expanded granules are perfect);
  • Place the agrofilm folded in several layers on the drainage, pressing it lightly with your fingers;
  • Fill the pot with soil;
  • Vegetable plants: Plant annual flowers densely. Don’t be afraid to fill the entire pot with flowers – plant them close to each other. Some flowers may have already bloomed at the time of planting, while others may open later, creating a little mystery;
  • Cover the remaining empty soil surface with a thin tree bark mulch to prevent the soil from splashing during watering.

That’s all! When you water the plant, the water will first be filtered through the agrofilm, then through drainage and finally come out cleaner.
