Nurseries in Poland and «Green is life 2024» exhibition: my impressions

And nurseries in Poland and the «Green is life 2024» exhibition: this is how my September began. If you’ve never been, I’m sharing my impressions to let you know that maybe it’s worth a visit next year.

Nurseries in Poland and "Green is life 2024" exhibition: my impressions

Paroda «Green is life» 2024

Show» None is life» (Polish: «Zielen to Zycie»), organized by the Association of Polish Nurseries and its affiliated agencies, took place from September 5 to 7 in Warsaw. This exhibition is one of the most important events for nurseries, it was visited by around 9,500 participants in three days.

Over 23% of exhibitors are foreign companies and 10% of professionals visiting the fair come from outside Poland. As of 2023, they represented 33 countries, including Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Belarus and Germany.

Enthusiasts are also invited to the fair (the third day is dedicated to them), but the most important thing is to come here for those who work in nurseries and for those looking for plant partners for large orders. Here you can learn about nurseries that supply plants wholesale and you will find suppliers for more: mulch, substrates, pots, small and large equipment.

Slogan of the exhibition «Experience the power of synergy!» emphasizes cooperation between the green sector and other disciplines. This was also reflected in the exhibition events, for example in a small conference that took place right here in the exhibition pavilion.

The presentation of plant innovations is traditionally an important part of the exhibition. I will present the winning plants at the end of the article.

Well, now I have to tell you about the nursery visits organized for us by the Polish Nursery Association.

Kindergartens in Poland – wide bridges

Together with reporters from other nations, we journeyed from Krakow to Warsaw. The first place we visited is the “PlantPol” nursery. Their main goal is to grow young plants, which they then sell to other nurseries or stores. It usually starts from cuttings, which are rooted, and these small plants are sold. They also grow plants in test tubes. Interestingly, they work more with the first method, so they do not sell fully grown potted plants that we can buy in any nursery in Lithuania, but only young plants.

Even though it does not sell directly to the final buyers, it still puts a lot of effort into advertising. By promoting their unique plant types, they hope to make them well-known. Once this happens, it doesn’t really matter which nursery you get that specific petunia or hydrangea from: the source of that young plant will be PlantPol. It’s a family-run business: Its founder jokes that his son-in-law has already become a TV star because of those ads.

The growing of patented types is a business matter. The nursery has areas in Portugal and Kenya where it grows parent plants. Each week, cuttings from these warm regions are flown to Poland, where they are rooted and readied for sale to other nurseries. This process shows a great example of international teamwork.

Moreover, PlantPol is among the first nurseries in Europe to represent the worldwide Proven Winners brand. It also plays a significant role in the growth of their business.

Szkolka Kapias – sustainable planting techniques and innovative solutions

Another nursery that left a strong impression was Szkolka Kapias. They grow conifers, deciduous shrubs and perennials, working only wholesale. As in other large nurseries, many processes are digitalized and automated.

After walking through the territory of the nursery, many questions were raised about mulch in pots. The plants are mainly mulched with pine bark or specially treated buckwheat husks, which become sticky and do not disintegrate when touched (see photo). Not only does it help retain moisture in the soil, but it is also a great example of how innovation can contribute to more efficient and environmentally friendly cultivation.

Also surprising were the potting systems created to protect the seedlings from the wind, a creation by a local craftsman to ensure the plants were not blown away by strong winds.

Kindergartens in Poland are run by families

We stopped at another nursery, also run by the second generation. Nothing surprising: in the post-Soviet period, many enterprises were created (as in Lithuania at that time), and now sons and daughters take the helm.

The A&M Walaszczyk nursery is not very large (only 3 hectares), but it only deals with wholesale sales. Every year more than 3 million seedlings are sold, including conifers and broad-leaved trees.

It was interesting to see how conifers are propagated by cuttings. This is not common, since more often coniferous varieties are grafted. However, this farm performed many experiments before developing the best methods for effective propagation via cuttings. And indeed the quality of the roots was astonishing. They sell rooted bare root cuttings and the price is much lower than grafted conifers.

Innovative systems at the fair

Let’s go back to the “Green is life” exhibition. The annual plant competition took place here: new varieties of plants were introduced, which this year were bred by nurseries in Poland and officially introduced to the market. Here is a list of them:

Chinese Miscanthus (Miscanthus sinensis) ‘Lady in Red’ – gold medal, journalism award, social media favourite.

Japanese Dogwood (Cornus kousa) ‘Flower Tower’ – Gold Medal.

White Dogwood (Cornus alba) ‘Nightfall’ – Silver Medal.

Sambucus nigra ‘Laced Up’ – silver medal.

Carex nigra ‘Balayage’ – silver medal.

Weigela florida ‘Vinho Verde’ – bronze medal.

Gaultheria ‘Florry’ – Special Mention.

Giant Shylock (Sedum telephium) ‘La Vie En Rose’ – special mention.

Hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) ‘Daredevil’ – special mention.

Chinese Miscanthus «Lady in Red» also won a gold medal in several categories. I interviewed the nursery owners who bred this variety and here is the article about this miscant.

We thank the Association of Polish Kindergartens for the invitation to come to the exhibition: it was interesting to see how the exhibition works and what interesting nurseries in Poland can offer.
