Where did Walpurgis Night come from?

Walpurgis Night originally dates back to the pagan folk festival “Beltane”, which our ancestors celebrated as a fertility festival and offered offerings to their ancestors and gods and played an important role in the annual cycle. The night’s current name originally comes from an English abbess named Walburga. On the Blocksberg (actually the Brockem in the Harz Mountains) but also on other mountains, the «witches» gathered to celebrate this night. This night has been an important part of our culture for hundreds of years. This was also taken up in German literature, for example by Goethe in «Faust», when Faust is taken by Mephisto to the Brocken to find distraction during Walpurgis Night and forget his Gretchen.

Then the woodruff is removed again, the punch is poured with sparkling wine and it can be served with ice or garnished with fresh gundel vine.
