5 ideas for working with children using wild herbs

Crafting with herbs and natural materials can be a delightful experience for children, offering them the chance to explore new possibilities while playing with nature‘s vibrant colors and unique shapes. It encourages them to unleash their creativity and find inspiration in the wonders of the natural world. The beauty of this activity lies in its simplicity—it requires very little to get started but offers so much in return. What makes this hands-on experience even more special is how it engages all the senses. Kids can breathe in the soothing fragrances of herbs, perhaps even taste some edible plants, feel the contrasting textures, and experiment with combining colors in captivating ways. It’s a wonderful way to nurture imagination, connect with nature, and create something truly unique.

If we then do crafts outdoors, the sounds of nature can have an effect on us and this can also have a very harmonizing and grounding effect on children. Since we are passionate about making crafts with herbs and plants, today we would like to present you with 5 ideas of what beautiful things you can create with your children with wild herbs.

1. The classic: floral decorations

5 ideas for working with children using wild herbs

The classic simply doesn’t get old or boring. Children can still have fun making a flower necklace, for example with daisies or dandelions. This flower chain can then be worn, for example, as a headpiece or necklace. All you need is the flower of your choice. You start with one flower and poke a small hole in the stem.

Now thread the next flower through the hole to the head and drill a new hole in the new stem and push the next flower through. Do this until you have created a chain long enough for your purposes. Now you simply connect the first and last flowers together and you have a fantastic flower chain. Here you can also combine different flowers with each other. Make sure you don’t use poisonous or allergy-causing plants.

2. Herbal pendant

Herbal charms are quick and easy to make, but last a long time and make a lovely gift, whether for someone else or yourself.

It works like this: you simply collect the herbs, flowers or flower heads and dry them. For example, you can place flowers in kitchen paper and press and dry them under heavy books. Once the flowers/herbs are dry you can now make a simple salt dough.

Salt dough recipe:

  • 2 cups salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup flour

Mix the ingredients well together; the dough should not stick to your hands. Now you can form balls and roll them out lightly with the corrugated iron to obtain round discs about 1 cm thick. You can then gently press on your dried herbs and possibly secure them very lightly with the corrugated wood. If you want a pendant or hanger, you can now make a hole in the upper edge of the pendant using, for example, a shish kebab skewer.
Now let the herbal pendant dry thoroughly on each side for approx. 2 days.

Our discovery book for children

We would like to interest children in herbs and wild plants, but we also invite adults to go out into nature with their children or grandchildren to observe plants and insects, collect herbs or fruits and use them to prepare excellent natural dishes. For this reason we have developed a children’s book: “Ben and Mara discover the world of wild herbs” is not a classic children’s book, but rather a book of discovery. This book features wild herbs and local medicinal plants. With this book you will be able to learn about nature a little better in a playful way.

In the first chapter you will accompany Mara and Ben and their grandparents throughout the year and discover how they discover herbs, wild plants and insects. In the second chapter the plants presented are explained in a simple way. The third chapter invites you to try the recipes and suggestions yourself. The book is only available from us in our small online herb witch shop at

By the way, the discovery book is also found in the savings set with discovery cards to take directly into nature. Different but easy to recognize wild herbs are found on the uncovered paper, which can then be discovered in nature using the image. On the back you can write down information about the location and animals that may be there. Discovery cards allow for discovery-based learning and are wonderfully suitable for children aged 6 and up. Click here for the tracking set.

3. Flower face portraits

You can also take really special photos with your kids using flowers and herbs as beautiful face decorations. It is important to choose only herbs that do not cause skin reactions and are not poisonous! Children can also choose flowers and plant parts themselves, as long as you make sure they pick “friendly” plants. You can then put a little penata cream or coconut oil or petroleum jelly on your face so that the flowers stay on your face. This way you can create a completely natural «makeup» and decorate your face with beautiful colors and shapes. To capture it all, you can of course take beautiful photos and print them large.

4. Herbal lanterns

You can also pick beautiful herbs and flowers together with the children and press them well. Dried and pressed, you can now make beautiful summer herb lanterns.

What you need for this:

  • Balloons
  • Tracing paper
  • Wallpaper glue
  • cord
  • row
  1. Inflate the balloons and attach string to the ends of the balloon so you can hang it to dry later.
  2. Tear the tracing paper into pieces of about 3×3 cm and place them in a bowl.
  3. Mix wallpaper glue in a cup.
  4. Now glue the balloon with wallpaper glue. Leave a free part at the top or bottom, for example around the cord, which will then be used to open the lantern.
  5. Now put 2-3 layers of paper cutouts on the glued balloon.
  6. Now you can distribute the pressed herbs on the balloon as you wish and then place another layer of tracing paper on top.
  7. Now let the balloon dry well for about 2-3 days. You can also hang it.

During this period the balloon begins to separate from the inside. Once the tracing paper is completely dry, you can pop the balloon with a needle or the tip of a knife and remove it. Now you can make 2 small holes in the side of the opening through which you can thread the wire. This allows you to hang the lantern on the string.

Now you can, for example, insert a battery-operated candle into the balloon and hang it in the children’s bedroom. The lantern gives off a beautiful light and the aromatic herbs stand out beautifully.

5. Funny herb heads

This is what you need:

  • Glass or plastic bottle
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon or border
  • Googly eyes
  • Felt or cardboard

It works like this: Herb pots are also beautiful, useful and sustainable, and you can decorate them as you wish. For this you can, for example, plant herbs from the garden or buy a herb pot. You can plant it in fresh soil in an old jam jar, or you can recycle an old plastic bottle by cutting it in half and filling it with soil and herbs. To embellish the edge, you can attach a beautiful ribbon or border. The grasses will later represent the hairs on your herbaceous head. Now you can, for example, attach some wiggly eyes, a felt or cardboard nose (preferably with a hot glue gun) and if you want you can add a mouth, but the heads look great without them. This will give you and your children new joy when harvesting herbs in the kitchen
