Treat warts naturally with wild plants

Many people know warts as annoying companions that keep appearing and can even multiply. But what exactly are warts, how do they appear and what naturopathic methods can help treat them? In particular, celandine has earned a particular reputation in natural medicine as a useful remedy against warts. Its bright yellow liquid, which comes out when the stems are broken, is traditionally used as a remedy to effectively combat these unwanted skin growths.

What are warts?

Warts (warts) are skin-colored, small, and (mostly) painless bumps on the skin. They are made of horn and can occur anywhere on the body. If the wart is in a very uncomfortable area, such as on the foot, it can cause pain due to pressure. Normally, warts are not dangerous and can heal on their own after a few weeks or months. However, hygiene must be taken into account. Because they are contagious, warts can spread to other parts of the body.

How do warts develop?

Warts are usually caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). These can, for example, enter the body through damaged skin and small skin lesions. Especially a weak immune system can favor the development of warts. But circulatory disorders, stress, psychological stress and a humid skin climate can also be considered risk factors. If the virus penetrates the skin, the cells in the upper layer of the skin are affected. Here the virus can then multiply in the cell nuclei. The cells can die and then keratinize. However, not all warts are the same, as there are different types of warts caused by different types of viruses.

What types of warts are there?

  • Common wart (also called common wart, common wart, or spiny wart)
  • plantar warts
  • Brush warts
  • Flat warts
  • Molar warts
  • Genital warts, but are caused by a different type of virus that differs from conventional wart viruses. Genital warts tend to occur in the genital area. In recent years they have gained greater importance. They are transmitted, among other things, through sexual contact.

Since wart discharge is usually very contagious, care must be taken to avoid further spread to other parts of the body and other people.

How can you prevent warts?

  • Do not touch warts with your hands and wash your hands thoroughly after each treatment
  • Always dry the spaces between your toes and skin folds well after showering or bathing
  • When having sexual intercourse with a new partner, use a condom and pay attention to safe sex, check your health / have a check-up
  • Wear bathing shoes in public bathrooms or saunas
  • Do not share towels, washcloths and other hygiene items with others and wash them hot enough or boil them if necessary.

Coleslaw

This herb is particularly well-known and proven in the treatment of warts, which is why it is also known as the “wart herb”. It is found mainly in spring in partially shaded places with nutrient-rich soil or on stony surfaces. Celandine is not suitable for consumption. It’s poisonous. In folk medicine, celandine is administered topically on warts. The milky juice of the herb is used here, which should be dabbed onto the affected area several times a day. It is important to dab the juice only on the wart, and not on the surrounding skin, since celandine milk has a corrosive effect. Also, you should not take this juice internally and you should watch out for stains, as the juice has a deep golden yellow color. Celandine is said to inhibit cell growth and therefore also works against viruses. It is best to have fresh celandine in the garden or on the balcony. For the cold season you can leave a tincture composed of 1 part finely chopped celandine and 5 parts alcohol, with approximately 40% vol., to infuse for 3 weeks. (recipe source: U. Bühring (2020), All about medicinal plants, S.386).

Dandelion milk juice

Dandelion milky juice can be used in the same way as celandine. Also in this case it is necessary to pay attention to possible skin reactions.

You can put cut garlic directly on the wart and, ideally, tape it onto the wart overnight. The application must be as targeted as possible so as not to irritate the skin too much.

Aloe Vera

If you have aloe vera at home, you can apply the gel directly to the wart. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is said to aid the healing process.
