Everyone knows the struggle—you know you should sleep to be well-rested for the next day, yet sleep simply eludes you. In English-speaking countries, many claim that banana tea is a useful remedy for sleep disorders. Here, we delve into the science behind this home remedy and provide essential tips you should know.
How can banana help with sleep disorders?

The banana is certainly tasty and very handy since you can carry it around easily without any packing. It keeps you satisfied for a bit and has plenty of potassium and magnesium. This can help with muscle relaxation as well as soothing the heart and overall calmness. It also has a good amount of tryptophan. This is a building block of protein that can help with falling asleep. Tryptophan is changed into 5-HTP in the brain. 5-HTP is then transformed into serotonin and melatonin, which is a key hormone for sleep. Tryptophan can be found in capsule form. But banana tryptophan is mainly found in the peel. This is why it is necessary to cook bananas with their peel. To prevent taking in harmful chemicals, the banana should be organic! A cup of banana tea can ultimately impact your melatonin levels. If there isn’t enough, sleep issues may happen. You can ask your doctor to check your melatonin level with a blood test.
Is banana tea worth trying?
If you have an organic banana on hand and would like to fall asleep better in the evening, then it’s definitely worth a try. However, you should under no circumstances use a conventionally grown banana as a substitute. For banana tea you will need:

Does rhubarb flower? You should avoid these 3 mistakes now, otherwise the harvest will be finished!- 1 organic banana
- 300 ml of water
- Ceylon cinnamon to taste (you can find out why to only use Ceylon cinnamon here)
How is banana tea prepared?
First, the banana should be washed thoroughly with warm water and lightly brushed. You can also scrub them with baking soda. Subsequently, it is cut with the peel into 2-3 cm thick slices, which are then placed in a pan with water. Now let the tea simmer for about three minutes, without letting it boil. It should then steep for 10 minutes with the lid closed and can then be filtered. You can also enrich the tea with a little honey or Ceylon cinnamon. You can also eat the cooked banana pieces or even bake them into banana bread the next day. However, you should throw away the peel. It only has a function in banana tea.
It is best to drink tea 30 minutes before going to bed and turn off all devices while doing so. Blue light also affects nutrition balance, and if you sit on your smartphone or laptop while drinking banana tea, this could have a negative effect on the time it takes to fall asleep.
How does banana tea work?
The tea has a relatively neutral flavor and above all the hint of cinnamon dominates the taste. Our test showed that the tea is definitely drinkable if you use a high-quality banana sprinkle, and, at least in our experiment, it helped us fall asleep well.
What to do if you have persistent sleep problems?
If you have short-term sleep problems, a banana tea can be a useful home remedy. If you suffer from problems falling asleep for a long time, you should definitely consult a doctor, as the reasons can be different. Hormonal balance, stress or an unfavorable diet can have a negative impact in this case. The right temperature in the bedroom and the position you sleep in can also have an impact.
