On December 4th, the day of Saint Barbara’s remembrance, a cherished tradition comes alive in several cultures. Known as Saint Barbara’s Day, this day carries a fascinating legend. According to the story, on this very date, Saint Barbara cut a branch from a tree and placed it in water. Remarkably, the branch began to bloom and continued flourishing until Christmas. This custom has evolved into a symbolic ritual, where people cut a branch
—often from a fruit tree like a cherry tree—and carefully place it in water with the hope that it will flower by Christmas Eve. The blossoming branch is believed to bring good fortune and joy during the holiday season. While the tradition is particularly beloved in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, it extends its roots to other European countries as well, preserving its charm and significance across generations.

The legend of Santa Barbara
The tradition of the Barbara branch is closely linked to the legend of Santa Barbara. Barbara was a young woman who lived in Nicomedia (now Izmit, Türkiye) in the 3rd century. Her father, Dioscurus, locked her in a tower to protect her from suitors. During her imprisonment Barbara converted to Christianity. Legend has it that Barbara was baptized in secret and cut a branch from a cherry tree. He placed this branch in water and it bloomed on the day of his execution. The flower on Barbara’s branch became a symbol of hope, miracles and the miracle of life despite adverse circumstances.

The tradition of the Barbara branch
The tradition of cutting a branch of Santa Barbara and placing it in water to see if it will bloom by Christmas Eve has spread over the centuries in many countries of Europe. However, depending on the weather and care of the branch indoors, it may bloom just a few days later. However, a few times we managed to get it to open exactly on December 24th. Sometimes it just became a New Year branch. This too can happen. But the custom is still pleasant.
Barbara branch selection
The selection of the Barbara branch is an important step in the tradition. Traditionally a cherry branch is used, but other fruit tree branches such as apple or pear are also appreciated. The branch should be fresh and about 30cm long. It is important that the branch is in a pot on the warm windowsill. It needs regular light, heat and fresh water for it to flower until Christmas.
