Grow eucalyptus: a fresh source from your garden
Buying a potted eucalyptus or growing it yourself is not only an enrichment for the medicine cabinet, but also a beautiful garden project. Eucalyptus plants are usually fast-growing plants that can add an aromatic note to the garden. They prefer sunny positions and well-drained soil. Be sure to choose the right eucalyptus for your climate, as some varieties are sensitive to frost. We have two different varieties that are kept outdoors in the summer and are still brought into the greenhouse in the winter, when there are particularly intense frosts. You can also bring eucalyptus indoors during the winter, but in this case it should be kept in a very sunny place. It is also important to water enough. It resents the lack of water and therefore quickly begins to lose its leaves.
Recognize and collect wild herbs
Our passion also lies in collecting and using wild herbs and medicinal plants. This is why we not only started this blog a few years ago, but also our book entitled “With wild herbs and medicinal plants all year round“(available here) published. In it we will show you how to recognize, collect and use the most important local wild herbs and medicinal plants yourself.
Winter hardiness of eucalyptus: choose the right variety
The hardiness of eucalyptus varies depending on the variety. Some species are hardy up to certain temperatures, while others are more sensitive to frost. If you live in a region with harsh winters, it is advisable to choose hardy varieties such as Eucalyptus gunnii or Eucalyptus pauciflora. Keep in mind, however, that even the hardiest eucalyptus species need protection from hard frost in the early years.
